CES takes the lead in Virtual Design and Construction (VDC)

Aug 27, 2015 7:30:00 AM

BIM_VDC_CES_Mechanical_EngineeringOver the years, CES has seen major advances in our application of CAD/BIM technology.  CES has moved past the BIM basics (clash detection, quantity extraction, and logistics) and are well on our way to a total transformation of how we execute our projects.

We are expanding our team to support current work, paving the way for new utilization of BIM like field layout, code checking, high performance building analysis, and rapid prototyping and building operations.

Evolution in the technology and application of CAD/BIM has necessitated a name change within our organization.  The CES CAD/BIM department will now be referred to as the VDC Department (Virtual Design & Construction).  BIM is a subset of VDC.

Typically, CES's piping and sheet metal CAD drawings incorporate the hanger and sleeve locations.  CES utilizes AutoCAD MEP 3D, QuickPen DuctDesigner 3D and QuickPen PipeDesigner 3D AutoCAD-based 3D CAD solutions, Naviswork for clash detection, QuickPen AutoBid Sheetmetal and QuickPen AutoBid Mechanical software.

However, our field crews have relied on conventional tools and techniques, such as stationery lasers, string lines and plumb bobs, to locate pipe and duct hangers and sleeves on a jobsite.  With CES's recent investment in a robotic total station, CES crews download the hanger points from the CAD model into the MEP layout software. Once benchmarks are established, they use the robotic total station to shoot hanger points using the laser.  Total Stations help CES perform layout tasks significantly more efficiently than with conventional mechanical systems for building construction.

CES VDC Services

CES leverages the latest technologies and fosters innovative strategies.  Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) & Building Information Modeling (BIM) is more than just software or visual 3D objects.  It's a process that harnesses, controls, and guides the vast amount of expert information contributed into a model; thus, drastically reducing risk and producing a true value to our clients.

Definition of BIM per the National BIM Standards Project Committee (NBIMS) „

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its lifecycle; defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition.

Definition of VDC „ (VDC):  the use of multi-disciplinary performance models of design-construction projects, including the Product (i.e., facilities), Work Processes and Organization of the design - construction - operation team in order to support business objectives. VDC models represent the functional intent, designed choices (Form) and predicted and measured behaviors of the Product, Organization and Process. With its focus on the facility design, BIM is a subset of VDC.
